Finland: Mika Kohonen to yet another WFC?

With the WFC in Riga just one month away, Finland’s coaches Petri Kettunen and Juha Jäntti first released their 40 names long list of WFC prospects.

Speculation about the final team sparked immediately and was developed the next day when Finland’s squad for the EFT tournament in Växjö became public. Officially not yet final, it was easy to guess there would be no major changes with only a few weeks to go.

Two years ago, waves of discussion flew high whether Mika Kohonen was still up to WFC games. With two goals and two assists in six games, one could say he was. Echoes of the same discussion are to be heard today again with the veteran still nominated at the age of 39. One dares expect the Finnish floorball icon to make the final team. Kohonen claims his knees and body feel better than for years and him scoring in the Svenska Superligan at more than a point per match seem to support his gut feeling.

Not often does one see players make their national team debut this close to a WFC tournament but two do. SPV’s 25-year old forward Jari Hankkio has flown under the national team coaches’ radar all his career but has been the sensation of the season. Salibandyliiga top scorer Hankkio was voted chosen Player of the Month in September by a popular vote.
