Galante: The Unstoppable

From September 2014

Kim Nilsson, The Hofbauer brothers, Tatu Väänänen. There will be a fierce competition about whos is to be the Nr 1 star of Champions Cup on October. The reigning one’s name is Alexander Galante Carlström.

- I think the tournament looks extremely exciting and I’m especially pleased that it is played in Switzerland because it’s such a nice country, Alexander Galante Carlstrom says.
- I know both Swiss teams have got class. We just met Wiler in Czech Open and saw it’s a physical team with world class players in their roster. About GC I don’t know that much but I know they have done well in the Swiss league and they have got two Swedes Eric Björk and Kim Nilsson who is one of the whole world’s best players.
Scouting the opponents is not the main task for the reigning CC Champions
- We usually keep our focus on our own game as we are quite comfortable with what we do. Before last year’s Champions Cup we had gathered no information whatsoever about out opponents. It’s best to start with your own game and make the necessary adjustments after you see what the other team does. But of course you keep a bit of an extra eye on your opponent’s foremost players.

Supertriumph in last year’s edition
Alexander Galante Carlström has two seasons of remarkable success behind him. Two years ago, a hat-trick in the Svenska Superligan final against Dalen. Last spring, the decisive overtime goal against Storvreta in this years’s Swedish final.
And then there was last year’s Champions Cup in Tampere, Finland.
Swiss Alligator Malans and Finland’s Classic and SPV did everything they could to stop Alexander Galante Carlström and his linemates Rasmus Enström and Alexander Rudd but to no avail.
Galante Carlström scored nine goals and had four assists in his four games, leaving little doubt about who was the tournament’s biggest star.
In Finland, Falun kept experts arguing over whether it was the Swedes’ physical strength and stamina or their superior technical skill that made the difference.
- Hard to say, Alexander Galante Carlström stops to ponder.
- Our team has reached an extremely advanced stage in the physical and we are usually to play through the whole game using just two lines. I don’t really think technical or tactical abilities were decisive, it was more like that we just have so many top players in our team.
Last year, both Alligator Malans and Finnish SPV found themselves defeated by Falun in high-scoring games.
- They were both very good opponents with slightly different styles of play. SPV had the better defence and played more organised floorball while Alligator was physically stronger and kept running more.

Always a forward
It’s no wonder Alexander Galante Carlström has always been a forward and a goalscorer. First it was in football and ice hockey but floorball came along at an early stage.
A football team for six-year olds in Västerås took up floorball in the winter and founded a club called Westra Aros. First it was sticks and hollow balls just among the guys but soon they started challenging other teams, too, and a career was on its way.
Sweden was already global dominator in floorball but the young talent found his idol elsewhere.
- I did not yet have any particular floorball stars to admire but there was Peter Forsberg, the hockey player. A humble player with qualities no one else had. His playmaking and goalscoring abilities were on a level of their own.
The more traditional sports had to go when Galante Carlström was in his 15’s. In the hockey rink, he was getting too small and football got less fun when the games moved to a bigger pitch and were 11 against 11 with offside. The forward with hunger for goals could no longer run down the pitch to wait for the ball there.
Around the same time, floorball started happening for young Alexander Galante Carlström when he was called to play for local Västerås IB with stars like Christian Mattsson.

Not all just roses
In 2010, Alexander Galante Carlström moved to Falun best known for its Stora Kopparberg copper and gold mine in the middle of endless forests. His first season there was a disappointment. Mere 19 points and little playing time was a catastrophe for a player who wants to play regular time, power play, everything there is and score. After contemplating a move back to Västerås the talent decided to show his coach what he was made of.
The rest is history. No less than 63 points the next season and two straight Swedish titles after that left no questions unanswered.
Still, Alexander Galante Carlström is not a full-time floorball player.
- In Sweden you don’t get paid that well just to play floorball. Besides playing, I also work as floorball instructor and at the club office. But I don’t comlpain. I get to work just 50 per cent and I get time off when needed.

Strong enough for floorball
With his 171 centimetres and 72 kilos, Alexander Galante Carlström would never had made the NHL but inside the floorball rink it is quite enough. With his low centre of gravity and excellent balance, Alexander Galante Carlström is almost impossible to push aside and what makes him a poisonous opponent are his ball control skill, playmaker abilities and quick shot that finds the top corners from almost unexisting spaces.
Alexander Galante Carlström likes running more than he likes working out at the gym and he’s been preparing for the upcoming season since April, running intervals and up the famous Falun skiing hill. But sessions at the gym are there, too. Alexander Galante Carlström intends to be an even stronger player than before with more strength in his legs and upper body to win even more duels.

Big one in Gothenburg in December
Out with injury, Alexander Galante Carlström was not there when Sweden regained their WFC title in Zürich in 2012. With the next WFC coming up in Gothenburg, there are no alternatives. Alexander Galante Carlström must be in the team.
- To represent your country on a WFC at home is the bsolute dream that you may not get the chance to experience again. I think Sweden winning the title again two years ago was mostly because out new generation of young hungry players stepped in. Switzerland and Finland had pretty much the same rosters as in 2010 and their generation chances were yet to come.
Back in April, Finland beat Sweden 7-2 in the EFT.
- We were trying out a new defensive system and testing certain other things but still you got to look in the mirror and learn from your mistakes. Finland had many new talented players and we sure learned our lesson from that game.
With a player Alexander Galante Carlström’s class, you ve got to ask yourself when he is going to try his luck abroad.
- Sure, there are several clubs from outside of Sweden that have called and we’ll see what happens later. I’m definitely not going to close any doors, Alexander Galante Carlström hints.
